Armenian poppy is a short-lived mountain species from Turkey, the Caucasus and northern Iran. A bristly rosette of divided grey-green leaves produces wiry stems topped by silky cups in orange, scarlet, red or yellow, each surrounding a dark or golden centre. The flowers have the luminous, tissue-paper quality of all true poppies and are followed by neat seed capsules. Naturally associated with open slopes and rocky ground, Papaver armeniacum is best treated as a biennial or self-renewing perennial in a sunny scree or gravel garden with sharp drainage.
