Papaver bracteatum is a powerful perennial poppy from the Caucasus and northern Iran, producing large scarlet flowers above coarse, deeply divided foliage. Each broad, crumpled petal carries a bold black basal blotch, while conspicuous leafy bracts sit immediately beneath the bloom and distinguish the species from related Oriental poppies. The plant develops a deep root and can form a long-lived, drought-tolerant clump in sunny soil. It is rich in the alkaloid thebaine and should be regarded strictly as an ornamental rather than a culinary or medicinal plant.
