Higgins’ beardtongue is a compact Wasatch Mountain penstemon forming a low woody-based clump among rocks and gravel. Short stems carry blue-violet to purple tubular flowers, often with a paler throat, above narrow green leaves. It occurs at high elevation in Utah and adjoining mountain country, where intense sun, cold winters and thin mineral soils keep the plant neat and durable. Rare in ordinary gardens but ideal for a trough or scree, it rewards full light, sharp drainage and protection from warm, humid conditions that encourage soft growth and crown rot.
