Phemeranthus Calycinus

Large-flowered fameflower is a compact North American succulent perennial with tufts of narrow, fleshy leaves and wiry stems topped by brilliant magenta to purple-pink flowers. The silky blooms usually open only for a few hours in bright afternoon sunshine, then close, while fresh buds continue through summer. Native to rocky glades, prairies and shallow-soiled outcrops from the central United States into northern Mexico, Phemeranthus calycinus is adapted to drought and heat. Its vivid colour and unusual daily rhythm make it ideal for a sunny trough or gravel garden.
