Black rampion is an unusual central European perennial with a basal clump of fresh green leaves and upright stems topped by dense, elongated heads of almost black violet flowers. Each narrow floret curves outwards from the spike, creating a bristling bottlebrush effect unlike a conventional bellflower. Native to meadows, woodland margins and mountain grassland, Phyteuma nigrum combines dark flower colour with a light, natural habit. It thrives in cool, humus-rich soil in sun or partial shade and makes a distinctive companion for grasses, geraniums and pale woodland perennials.
