Plantago Major Variegata

Plantago major ‘Variegata’ transforms the familiar broadleaf plantain into an ornamental foliage plant. Low rosettes of broad, strongly ribbed leaves are irregularly marbled, streaked and splashed with cream, white and green, making every seedling slightly different. Slender summer spikes of small green-brown flowers rise above the foliage but can be removed to preserve a tidy rosette and prevent prolific self-seeding. Tough and adaptable, it is useful for path edging, containers and informal ground cover, though green reversions should be removed.
