Polygonatum hirtum, now usually treated as Polygonatum latifolium, is a robust broad-leaved Solomon’s seal with arching stems lined by large, fresh green leaves. In late spring, pairs or small clusters of creamy white tubular bells hang beneath the foliage, often tipped with green, and are followed by rounded blue-black berries. The hairy stems and broader leaves distinguish it from the common garden species. Native to European woodland and scrub, it forms a handsome, slowly spreading colony in humus-rich shade, where the graceful stems provide structure before dying back in autumn.
