Primula matthioli subsp. pekinensis, formerly Cortusa pekinensis, is a graceful woodland primrose from northern China, Korea and the Russian Far East. Rounded, heart-based leaves are deeply lobed and toothed, forming a fresh green rosette beneath slender stems of nodding purple-violet bells. The flowers open in a loose umbel and display projecting styles that add delicate movement. Naturally found beside streams, among shrubs and along woodland margins at altitude, it is an excellent plant for cool, humus-rich shade where the soil remains moist but aerated.
