Primula Wilsonii

Wilson’s primrose is a commanding Chinese candelabra primula with a substantial rosette of dark, smooth, aromatic leaves. Tall stems carry widely spaced whorls of fragrant, nodding flowers in deep purple, maroon-red or almost black, creating a dramatic tiered display from late spring into summer. The sombre colour is exceptional within the genus and is particularly effective beside water or against fresh green foliage. Native to moist mountain ground in China, it demands deep humus, partial shade and permanently wet soil that remains cool and oxygenated.
