Japanese wingnut is a large, graceful deciduous tree from mountain streams and river valleys across Japan. Broad pinnate leaves create a light canopy and may colour yellow in autumn, while exceptionally long hanging chains of winged nuts develop after the inconspicuous catkins, sometimes reaching nearly half a metre. The fruits age to an attractive rusty brown and sway beneath the branches. Pterocarya rhoifolia is considered one of the hardiest wingnuts and produces fewer troublesome root suckers than some relatives, making it a distinguished specimen for spacious, moist gardens.
