Ranunculus crithmifolius is a rare New Zealand scree buttercup forming low, fleshy rosettes of glaucous leaves divided into narrow, celery-like segments. Short stems carry solitary, shining yellow flowers that appear large above the compact plant, followed by rounded heads of beaked seed. Endemic to subalpine screes of the South Island, it creeps slowly by stout rhizomes through shifting mineral ground. Its conservation status is declining, giving responsibly raised plants particular value. Cool roots, gritty humus and constant moisture are essential in cultivation.
