ViewSartori’s buttercup is a Balkan alpine perennial with a low tuft of divided green leaves and short stems carrying glossy golden-yellow flowers. The petals have the polished sheen characteristic of Ranunculus and shine brightly against limestone and gravel in late spring and summer. Named for the nineteenth-century Greek botanist Basile Sartori, the species inhabits mountain grassland, rocky slopes and crevices in south-eastern Europe. Compact and hardy, it is best displayed in a sunny trough or scree where the roots remain cool and the crown drains instantly after rain.
