Rosa Woodsii

Woods' rose is a hardy western North American shrub with slender reddish-brown stems, paired prickles and fresh pinnate leaves. Fragrant single flowers in pink to deep rose open in early summer around golden stamens, then mature into smooth red hips that persist into autumn and winter. The plant spreads by suckers to form sheltering thickets used by birds and small mammals and has long been valued in native restoration. Tough in cold, drought and exposed ground, it suits wildlife hedges, banks and informal gardens with space for its natural colony-forming habit.
