Salvia Transylvanica

Transylvanian sage is a hardy Romanian perennial forming a broad basal clump of scalloped leaves and lax stems carrying numerous rich violet-blue flowers. The blooms are arranged in loose whorls along the upper stems, creating a strong but informal display from early summer and often repeating after cutting back. Named for Transylvania, where it is native, the species was introduced to modern horticulture comparatively recently. Bees relish the nectar-rich flowers, while the plant's resilience and generous scale suit cottage borders and naturalistic planting.
