Scilla Liliohyacinthus

The Pyrenean squill forms a bold spring clump of broad, glossy leaves and erect stems carrying loose clusters of soft blue, star-shaped flowers. Its foliage resembles a miniature lily or hyacinth, giving rise to the name Scilla lilio-hyacinthus, while the open blooms create a fresh woodland display before trees are fully in leaf. Native to mountain woods and rocky ground in south-western Europe, it is hardy, long lived and excellent for naturalising beneath shrubs or through a cool border with humus-rich, well-drained soil.
