The old horticultural name Sisyrinchium bermudiana is commonly applied to narrow-leaved blue-eyed grass, now treated as Sisyrinchium angustifolium. Tufts of dark green, grass-like leaves send up flattened stems carrying small violet-blue stars with brilliant yellow eyes from late spring through summer. Each bloom is brief, but fresh flowers open in succession. Native to eastern North America, this hardy iris relative suits gravel gardens, edging and naturalistic planting and may seed itself freely where conditions are favourable.
