Sophora Prostrata

Sophora prostrata is a distinctive New Zealand kowhai confined to the eastern South Island. Dense zigzagging branches form a compact shrub, carrying minute pinnate leaves and drooping orange-yellow pea flowers in spring. The contorted architecture remains striking when the plant is not in bloom and suits dry banks, gravel gardens and bonsai-style cultivation. This endemic species is currently regarded as At Risk - Declining, giving responsibly raised plants conservation interest. Full sun and lean, sharply drained soil preserve its naturally compact character.
