Thespesia populnea, the portia or milo tree, is a pantropical coastal evergreen with glossy heart-shaped leaves and hibiscus-like flowers. Each bloom opens pale yellow with a maroon eye, then deepens through orange, pink and red before falling, so several colours may appear together. The rounded fruits and dense crown follow the flowering display. Salt tolerant and wind resistant, the species has great cultural importance across the Indian Ocean and Pacific, where its richly coloured timber has long been used for carving, bowls and fine woodwork.
