Veratrum Album Var Flavum

Veratrum album var. flavum is an imposing false hellebore with a bold spring clump of broad, deeply pleated leaves and stout summer stems carrying large branched panicles of greenish-yellow star flowers. The architectural foliage has an almost tropical presence despite the plant's exceptional hardiness. Native ancestry from European mountain meadows gives it a preference for cool, humus-rich and reliably moist soil. Slow to mature but long lived, it makes a dramatic woodland-edge specimen. Every part contains powerful toxins and must never be eaten.
