Zigadenus fremontii is the historic name for Toxicoscordion fremontii, Fremont's death camas of south-western Oregon, California and Baja California. Broad basal leaves are followed in spring by upright racemes of creamy white star flowers, each displaying green to yellow nectary glands around the centre. Named for explorer and botanist John C. Fremont, it is an attractive bulb of chaparral, oak woodland and rocky slopes. Its beauty is deceptive: every part contains powerful toxic alkaloids and it must never be confused with edible camas or wild onions.
