Description

The astonishing appearance of this extremely rare fruit can be best described as a cluster of knobbly cherry tomatoes fused together. The thick-skinned, very tasty fruits with a good old-fashioned tomato flavour will certainly make quite a talking point! But to really amuse, or even shock your guests, serve up plates of salad with thinly sliced sections of selected fruits. With care you can produce unusual, and strikingly lifelike shapes of e.g. animals...and other, ahem, risky subjects! This spectacular scalloped tomato was found in the dry mountains of Mexico, where it's grown by the Zapotecs. (Cordon)

Sowing Advice

Seeds are surface-sown or covered only slightly. Do not allow the soil to dry out. Containers are held in warm conditions until sprouts appear, which may take anywhere from 3-10 days. Move sprouting plantings immediately to bright light conditions, such as a south-facing window. Inadequate light is a frequent cause of failure of young seedlings. At about the time of last frost, set out seedlings into grow bags.
