Description

Liatris spicata, commonly known as Blazing Star or Gayfeather, is a stunning herbaceous perennial that adds vertical drama to gardens with its tall, feathery spikes of violet-purple flowers. Blooming from the top down, the flower spikes create a striking display during mid to late summer, attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Its narrow, grass-like leaves form an elegant clump at the base, providing year-round texture to borders and wildflower meadows. Perfect for pollinator-friendly gardens, Liatris spicata thrives in sunny locations with well-drained soils, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping or naturalized settings. It is drought-tolerant once established and resists deer and rabbits, ensuring long-lasting beauty. This versatile plant complements a variety of garden styles, including prairie, cottage, and modern landscapes.

Sowing Advice

Sow immediately at any time onto preferably a soil-based compost, covering with fine grit to approximately their own depth. Germination MAY be quicker if kept at 15 to 20 degrees C. but many seeds WILL NOT come up the year they are sown, needing winter chilling after sowing, and ONLY come up with natural spring germination.
