Description

Developed and released by the University of Nebraska in 1944, this old favourite has got a fabulous balance of sweet and acidic, resulting in a rich and delectable flavour. One of the best-known historic tomatoes, the medium-sized fruit are productive and early. In the mid-fifties (prior to the advent of hybridized tomatoes), this became one of the most popular varieties of tomato in the US. In 1947, Oscar H. Will & Co. stated, "It out-yielded all other varieties in South Dakota trials. "Then along came the hybrid types and this (along with many other kinds) fell out of favour". ''Which?' Magazine noticed the glories of this now old variety, and its popularity is now gaining strength. It is easy to grow under glass or outside in a sheltered position, and is a semi-bush variety, meaning that you side shoot the plant for the first couple of feet. It then branches out and becomes bush-like at the top of the plant.

Sowing Advice

Seeds are surface-sown or covered only slightly. Do not allow the soil to dry out. Containers are held in warm conditions until sprouts appear, which may take anywhere from 3-10 days. Move sprouting plantings immediately to bright light conditions, such as a south-facing window. Inadequate light is a frequent cause of failure of young seedlings. At about the time of last frost, set out seedlings into grow bags. Plants may need staking but there is no need to remove the side shoots.
