Gazania Rigens Sunny Side Up
In stock
Description
Gazania 'Sunny Side Up', commonly known as Treasure Flower, is a dazzling, low-growing perennial (often treated as an annual) that brings a burst of bright color to gardens. This cultivar is named for its unique blooms, which resemble a sunny-side-up egg with a vibrant yellow center surrounded by white petals, accented with orange highlights at the base. The flowers close at night or during overcast weather, adding a dynamic quality to the plant's appeal. Thriving in full sun and well-drained soils, Gazania 'Sunny Side Up' is heat and drought-tolerant, making it ideal for sunny borders, rock gardens, and container displays. Its silvery-green foliage provides a beautiful contrast to the bright blooms, maintaining an attractive appearance even when not in flower. This plant is a magnet for pollinators such as bees and butterflies, adding life to your garden while requiring minimal maintenance.
Sowing Advice
Sow seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost date. Use a well-draining seed-starting mix, and press seeds lightly into the soil surface without covering, as they need light to germinate. Maintain a temperature of 18–22°C (65–72°F) and keep the soil slightly moist. Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days. Once seedlings have developed true leaves, transplant them into individual pots and harden them off before planting outdoors. Space plants 20–30 cm apart in a sunny location with well-drained soil. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming.
