Kniphofia Hirsuta Fire Dancer
In stock
Description
Kniphofia hirsuta 'Fire Dancer', commonly known as Fire Dancer Red Hot Poker, is a compact perennial renowned for its vibrant, torch-like flower spikes. The blooms, which transition from fiery red to orange and yellow as they mature, appear atop slender, upright stems that rise above clumps of narrow, grass-like foliage. This long-flowering variety adds a dynamic splash of color to borders, cottage gardens, and mixed perennial beds. Thriving in full sun and well-drained soils, Fire Dancer is drought-tolerant once established, making it an excellent choice for low-maintenance and water-wise gardens. Its nectar-rich flowers attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, while also being resistant to deer and rabbits. The compact growth habit ensures it fits beautifully into smaller gardens or containers.
Sowing Advice
Best sown in late winter to early spring. Use a well-draining seed-starting mix and press seeds lightly into the soil surface without covering, as they require light for germination. Maintain a temperature of 18–22°C (65–72°F) and keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Germination typically occurs within 3–4 weeks. Once seedlings have developed, transplant them into individual pots and grow them on until conditions are suitable for outdoor planting. Space plants 30–50 cm apart in sunny, well-drained locations.
