Description

Dahlia australis, commonly known as Southern Dahlia, is a species dahlia native to regions of Mexico and Guatemala. This herbaceous perennial is characterized by its upright growth habit, reaching heights of up to 150 cm. It features dark stems and bright green, trifoliate leaves. In late summer to early autumn, it produces nodding, star-shaped single blooms approximately 5 cm across, with eight pointed lilac-pink petals surrounding a yellow central disc. While it may be shy to flower under certain conditions, when it does, it adds a delicate charm to the garden. Thriving in full sun and well-drained, fertile soils, Dahlia australis benefits from regular watering during the growing season to promote healthy growth and flowering. It's suitable for borders, cottage gardens, and as a specimen plant. In regions with severe and prolonged frost, tubers should be lifted and stored over winter to protect them from freezing temperatures.

Sowing Advice

Sow seeds indoors in early spring, using a well-draining seed-starting mix. Lightly cover the seeds with soil and maintain consistent moisture and a temperature of 18–22°C (65–72°F). Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days. Once seedlings have developed true leaves and the risk of frost has passed, harden them off and transplant them outdoors, spacing plants 50–75 cm apart. For tuber division, divide healthy tubers in spring, ensuring each division has at least one eye, and plant them in prepared garden beds.
