Description
Metrosideros laurifolia, commonly known as Laurel Ohia, is an evergreen shrub or tree native to New Caledonia. It features large, thick, leathery leaves up to 17 cm (6.7 inches) long, often with pinkish-red stalks. The young foliage emerges with an intense coppery-red hue, adding vibrant color to the landscape. During its blooming period from spring to early summer, the tree is adorned with masses of yellow flowers with long stamens, creating a striking visual display. Thriving in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soils, Metrosideros laurifolia is adaptable to various soil types, including sandy and rocky substrates. It is drought-tolerant once established, making it suitable for xeriscaping and low-water gardens. This species can grow into a sizeable tree, reaching up to 20 meters (65 feet) in height, but in poorer, more exposed sites, it may remain a large shrub. Its ornamental appeal, combined with its adaptability, makes it a valuable addition to warm temperate and some tropical climates.
Sowing Advice
Sow seeds in a well-draining seed-starting mix, lightly covering them with soil. Maintain consistent moisture and a temperature of 20–25°C (68–77°F). Germination typically occurs within 2–4 weeks. For cuttings, take semi-hardwood cuttings in summer, dip the cut end in rooting hormone, and plant in a moist, well-draining medium. Keep the cuttings in a humid environment until roots develop. Once established, transplant seedlings or rooted cuttings into individual pots and grow them on until they are ready for outdoor planting. Space plants appropriately to accommodate their mature size.
