ANACARDIUM OCCIDENTALE
In stock
Description
This tree produces beautiful, rose-coloured fragrant flowers, which then develop into edible red fruits, called cashew apples. The actual cashew nut then grows in a shell at the bottom of each apple. So as well as being an attractive tree, it provides growers with two edible crops. Cashew nut trees are native to Brazil, and therefore require a tropical or subtropical climate. Ideally, the temperature should not drop below 50F (10C), nor rise above 105F (40C). Cashew Nut trees can still be grown in more temperate climates, but would require a greenhouse or conservatory. THESE ARE RAW CHASHEW NUTS (SEEDS) FOR PLANTING ONLY, TOXIC IF INGESTED! Handling raw chashews can in some cases cause skin rashes so you may want to wear gloves.
Sowing Advice
Care must be taken when planting cashew seeds, because the oil from the shells can cause a reaction similar to poison sumac, producing a burning rash and painful blisters. It is recommended that you wear gloves to prevent any oil transferring onto your hands. The nuts should be soaked in warm water for 10 minutes prior to sowing. Plant your cashew tree in sandy, well-draining compost / soil and keep moist. Germination usually occurs within just four days, although some seeds may take longer.
