Description
Neolamarckia cadamba, commonly known as Kadamba or Burflower-Tree, is a fast-growing, evergreen tree native to South and Southeast Asia. Known for its straight trunk and broad, umbrella-shaped crown, this impressive species can grow up to 45 meters tall. Its leaves are large, glossy, and ovate, contributing to its lush appearance. During the rainy season, the tree produces fragrant, spherical orange-yellow flowers, which are highly attractive to pollinators like bees. The flowers are followed by small, fleshy, orange-yellow fruits, which are reportedly edible. This adaptable species thrives in full sun and moist, well-drained soils, making it ideal for agroforestry systems, reforestation, and urban shade projects. Kadamba is also widely revered in Indian culture and is often planted near temples. Its fast growth and utility as timber, pulpwood, and firewood make it economically valuable, while its ability to improve soil health adds ecological benefits.
Sowing Advice
Sow seeds in a well-draining seed-starting mix without covering them, as they require light to germinate. Keep the soil moist and maintain a temperature of 25–30°C (77–86°F) for optimal germination. Germination usually occurs within 2–3 weeks. Once seedlings develop their first set of true leaves and reach a height of 10–15 cm (4–6 inches), transplant them into individual pots. Grow on until sturdy enough for garden planting, spacing trees 4–5 meters apart to accommodate their mature size.
