Although a Victorian variety, this still remains one of the best varieties for autumn sowing to stand the winter. Forms compact plants which produce solid pointed hearts. Can also be sown in spring for autumn cropping.
Sow the seed thinly in mid July to August in a well prepared seed bed in shallow drills 1" deep. Keep well watered. Thin the seedlings as they appear to 3" apart. Transplant the seedlings when they are about 6" tall to the growing site 12" apart. Set the young plants 1" deeper than they were in the seed bed. Harvest from March to April.
