Begonia Grandis Alba Subsp Evansiana
In stock
Description
This is the pure white version of this rare and fabulous begonia hardy down to zone 6 or more! Most attractive, fleshy, olive green foliage with deep red veins beneath, displays beneath dividing red stems of bunches of fragrant white flowers 3cm wide. It blooms from summer right into very late autumn! Planted in moisture-retentive but freely draining soil, and mulched well with bark this hardy begonia can be grown outside all the year around. It has top growth hardy to minus 2 degrees C, but the tuberous roots have always survived every winter, even frozen at minus 10C here! And in very late autumn it produces numerous bulbils between the stems that root easily to propagate more plants!
Sowing Advice
For best results, sow seeds in good light at any time onto a good soil-based compost. Very carefully water in the seeds but do not cover then with any compost at all. We recommend germinating at 15 to 20 degrees C. Seeds should ideally germinate in between 2 and 6 weeks. Pot on seedlings into a small pot. Begonias produce very little seed, and the dust-like seeds are some of the very smallest in the world. We may sometimes supply them mixed with Fuller's Earth powder to enable easy sowing.
