Pumpkin Hundred Weight
Producing large, round orange fruits of up to 25kg, this is a real showstopper and a great one for the children ( and the big kids too) to grow in competitions, though a 'hundredweight' is more likely to be achieved if just a single fruit is left to grow on each plant. Perhaps not one for the smaller gardens, but great for larger spaces or the vegetable patch. A great variety for roasting, soups and pies, as well as some monster Halloween lanterns! Best grown in a sheltered position in full sun, with well-drained soil.
Sow seed on edge 1.5cm (1/2") deep to prevent rotting in pots or trays during April to May 2.5cm (1") apart under glass at 20°C (68°F) using good quality seed sowing compost. Can be sown outdoors from Mid-May to June, directly where they are to grow with 2-3 seeds per station, thinning to the strongest plant.
