In stock
Description
Primula candelabra 'Pillar Box', commonly referred to as Pillar Box Candelabra Primrose, is a stunning perennial known for its tiered whorls of bright crimson-red flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer. The vivid blooms are held on tall, upright stems above a rosette of vibrant green leaves, creating a striking candelabra-like effect. This variety thrives in damp, shaded areas, making it ideal for woodland gardens, pond edges, or shaded borders. This moisture-loving primrose performs best in partial shade and humus-rich soils that remain consistently moist. Its bold color and unique flowering habit make it a standout in spring and early summer displays, while its ecological benefits include attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Pillar Box is a hardy and low-maintenance plant that naturalizes well in suitable conditions, offering long-term seasonal interest.
Sowing Advice
Primula seeds may be sown in good light conditions at any time onto a loam-based compost, barely cover so that around 50% are still visible. We never use artificial heat, primulas are COOL germinators! As a rule best temperatures are usually between 10 and 15 degrees C. (e.g. a cool greenhouse or northerly window sill) PLEASE NOTE: Temperatures exceeding 15 C can prevent germination, and above 20 C expect very little germination as seeds can go dormant as a protective measure. Germination can take up to 6 weeks, but sometimes takes much longer. Use a well-draining seed-starting mix and press the seeds lightly onto the surface without covering, as they require light to germinate. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged and maintain a temperature of 15–20°C (59–68°F). Germination may take 2–4 weeks. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots and grow them on until they are robust enough for outdoor planting. Space plants 30–45 cm apart in a shady location with consistently moist soil.
