Eryngium Yuccifolium

Description
Eryngium yuccifolium, commonly known as Rattlesnake Master, is a distinctive perennial plant that adds a unique architectural element to prairie landscapes. As a member of the Apiaceae family, this native North American species showcases linear, strap-like leaves arranged in a rosette formation, reminiscent of yucca plants. These leaves, which can reach lengths of up to 2 feet (60 cm), contribute to the plant's bold and structural presence. The foliage, tough and leathery, is an adaptation to the harsh conditions of its native prairie habitat. The flower heads of Eryngium yuccifolium are intriguing globes composed of tiny, tightly packed, greenish-white florets. These distinctive inflorescences rise on sturdy stems above the foliage, creating a spiky yet elegant display. The flower heads are not only visually captivating but also attract pollinators, adding ecological value to the garden. Indigenous to the central and eastern regions of North America, Rattlesnake Master thrives in well-drained soils, including those with sandy or clay compositions. Its adaptability to a variety of soil types, coupled with its tolerance for drought conditions, makes it a resilient and low-maintenance addition to native plant landscapes. The spiky flower heads, though unconventional, contribute to the plant's ecological value and its ability to thrive in diverse prairie ecosystems.
Sowing Advice
Sow immediately at any time onto preferably a soil-based compost, covering with fine grit to approximately their own depth. Germination MAY be quicker if kept at 15 to 20 degrees C. but many seeds WILL NOT come up the year they are sown, needing winter chilling after sowing, and ONLY come up with natural spring germination. This definitely IS a cold germinator, only germinating in early spring.
