Description
Cassia moschata, commonly known as Bronze Shower or Musk Cassia, is a semi-deciduous tree native to Central and South America, ranging from southern Mexico to northern Brazil. It features a wide-spreading crown and can reach heights of up to 20 meters. The tree is renowned for its spectacular, pendulous inflorescences comprising 25–70 golden yellow to coppery flowers that bloom when the tree is mostly leafless, creating a striking visual display. The flowers emit a musk-like fragrance, adding to its ornamental appeal. Thriving in full sun and well-drained soils, Cassia moschata is drought-tolerant once established, making it suitable for xeriscaping and low-water gardens. Its dense wood is valued as firewood due to its prolonged burning properties. Additionally, the tree attracts wildlife, including pollinators such as bees and butterflies, enhancing the biodiversity of its surroundings.
Sowing Advice
To enhance germination, scarify the seeds by nicking the seed coat or soaking them in water for 24 hours until they swell. Sow the seeds at a depth of about 2 cm in a well-draining soil mix. Maintain a temperature of around 25°C (77°F) and keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Germination typically occurs within 1–2 weeks if the seeds are properly scarified; otherwise, it may take longer. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots and grow them on until they are ready for outdoor planting. Space plants appropriately to accommodate their mature size.
