Description

Leonotis leonurus, commonly known as wild dagga or lion's tail, is a flowering perennial plant that belongs to the Lamiaceae family. Wild dagga is a robust and erect herbaceous plant with square stems, typical of the mint family. It can grow up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) in height, and its long, tubular flowers cluster at the top of the stems, forming dense whorls. The opposite leaves are lance-shaped and have a slightly toothed margin. The most distinctive feature of Leonotis leonurus is its striking flowers. These tubular flowers, often orange to reddish-orange, resemble the mane of a lion, giving rise to the common name "lion's tail." The whorls of flowers create an eye-catching and ornamental display. Indigenous to southern Africa, wild dagga is found in a variety of habitats, including grasslands and open woodlands. It has been introduced and cultivated in other regions with suitable climates, such as parts of North America. This variety is well-suited for cultivation in warm, temperate climates. It prefers full sun and well-draining soil. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant. Regular pruning can help maintain a compact and bushy form. In some regions, particularly in South Africa, traditional healers have used various parts of the plant for medicinal purposes. The leaves and flowers are often made into infusions or teas. The tubular flowers of wild dagga are also attractive to pollinators, including bees and butterflies, making it a valuable plant for wildlife-friendly gardens.

Sowing Advice

Sow immediately at any time onto preferably a soil-based compost, covering with fine grit to approximately their own depth. Germination MAY be quicker if kept at 15 to 20 degrees C. but many seeds WILL NOT come up the year they are sown, needing winter chilling after sowing, and ONLY come up with natural spring germination.
