Description
Berkheya cirsifolia, commonly referred to as the Silver Berkheya or the Silver Thistle, is a captivating perennial native to South Africa. Its distinct silver-gray foliage, deeply lobed and velvety to the touch, sets it apart. This hardy plant typically reaches heights of 1 to 3 feet and bears thistle-like flowers with striking silver-gray bracts encircling the central yellow disc, creating flower heads of 2 to 3 inches in diameter. Bloom occurs during the late spring and summer months, adding a touch of uniqueness to the landscape. The sturdy, upright stems provide structural support to the foliage and flowers. Silver Berkheya thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, showcasing adaptability to arid and semi-arid conditions. Drought-tolerant once established, this plant is an excellent choice for xeriscapes and rock gardens. Beyond its ornamental value, the thistle-like flowers attract pollinators like bees and butterflies. While generally low-maintenance, it's worth noting that some species within the Berkheya genus may possess spiky or thorny characteristics, requiring careful handling. Introduce the Silver Berkheya to your garden for an eye-catching, drought-tolerant addition, contributing unique texture and color to your outdoor space.
Sowing Advice
Sow immediately at any time onto preferably a soil-based compost, covering with fine grit to approximately their own depth. Germination MAY be quicker if kept at 15 to 20 degrees C. but many seeds WILL NOT come up the year they are sown, needing winter chilling after sowing, and ONLY come up with natural spring germination.
